I got a catalog from these guys located in Tampa for Mail Order Cigars. The brands are all ones I've heard of, and the ratings quoted all check out, but the prices are incredibly low. This, of course makes me wonder. I'd love to be able to order good smokes in the mail, the convenience factor alone would be incredible, but I'm always leery of the "Incredible Savings" offerred. Anyway, let me know if you've dealt with them and how it worked out for you. Thanks! ~Jay

Well, I'm adventurous. I sent out an Order for a box of 25 Miraflor Torpedoes. I'll let you know what happens.

I've seen them as well, I was wondering how their brands stack up. Some of their humidor deals are amazing. Such as a 150 count humidor with 100 cigars for $129.00 But having a humidor stocked with crap is almost worse than an empty humidor.
Let me know how you fare!

Very familiar with Thompson's. Some good deals on known brands. Would not recommend the house "Thompson" brand - inconsistent smoke of marginal quality. Check out Two Guys Smoke Shop at www.2guyssmokeshop.com for a good selection and reasonable prices.

there is also J.R. Cigars, which is another discount retailer. they have stores and a catalog and a website: www.jrcigars.com.

as was said about Thompson's (of whom I have never heard) I would say that they have really good deals on known brands and if, like me, you have a couple things that you always like to have a number of in your humidor you can get good deals. I have tried one of thier 'designer imposter' house brands though and found that it didn't come at all close to being "just like an Ashton". not good for much more than humidor-stuffer.

I just visited J.R. the other day in burlington NC. the size and selection of that cigar shop is amazing. i just felt really giddy while walking around in there. if you've ever been to a tinderbox. J.R. is like 30 of those put togeather. and the smell.. was wonderful.

ive never had any tompsons, but my father may have, ill ask him about it. But i do have a nice little thompson travel humidor that i like a lot.

Thompson's have some good selections. Avoid the house brands, as mentioned earlier. However, if you want real name brands at low prices check this site out:

You guys are right, thompson's prices for humidors are awesome. But their cigars are often lacking a little something. They practically give them away when you buy a humidor to make it an awsome deal. I am personally planning to buy a couple for myself. They look classy, even the hardwood 25 count humidors. The cheapest one I found was about 40 bucks and they give you the hydrometer with it. You really cant beat that.

When companies like thompson have their own brand names, they import cigars called "seconds". Usually seconds are cigars that are made from bits and pieces or scraps from their premium cigars and are pressed into cheaper rate cigars. Believe it or not, seconds get me messed up. I use them when I really need to chill :)

Better online/mail order houses exist like jrcigars.com and phatash.com.

I've ordered from Thompson. Their signature line of machine mades are high quality tobacco, well made and fresh...no complaints.

I've also ordered from JR, best prices anywhere. The catalogs aren't as fun to read as they once were because Lew Rothman sold out to altadis.

Another great source is www.finckcigars.com they make their own line plus carry all the premiums at great prices.

    Hi Jay,
I have purchased from Thompson Cigars on a number of occasions and have been very pleased. Their shipping is very fast and my selections have come Fresh and very well packaged. Other companies I have used is Papacigar.com and Cigar.com I am presently enrolled in the cigar club with Papacigar.com and they have great selections, like my favorites Gurkha G3 and Rocky Patel's Vintage 1990, However the selections are plenty...God I know that all too well ! Because my Humidors (three to be exact) are full now (over 20 different brands) probably estimated 200+ cigars. I have been weeding out the OK smokes and re-ordering the brands I like. Have Fun buying online...

i've smoked a variety of Thompsons, including the Big Boy, and I would say that some of what I picked out were disappointing. None were excellent. If you find something you like, more power to ya!
As far as mailorder goes, I found their service usually excellent, although I know others have had problems at times when the sales staff gets overly agressive. Sure, some people can smoke 60 big cigars a month, I guess, but when I was smoking about 15, they would call and urge me to order more, and more...
When you are dealing mailorder for major brands, the best thing to do is to comparison shop. These days, you can find the price on something like Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1 can vary as much as $50. When I'm looking at prices for a widely-available major brand, I always look at JR first. Mike's can occasionally run a sale with prices better than JR, and I would suggest you check out Famous Cigars too. Sometimes Thompson has a deal that looks good, perhaps on a size or brand that's been discontinued. Within a half-hour of surfing, you can probably find the best price on what you want.
I've seen people brag about good prices in on-line auctions, but that's too much work and not enough certainty for me. Good luck in your hunting.
